Co-Responder Programs
In Partnership with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and LSF Health Systems
Mental Health Resource Center (MHRC) operates the Co-Responder Program in collaboration with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) and LSF Health Systems to provide immediate mental health intervention during law enforcement calls for service.
The Co-Responder Program pairs licensed mental health clinicians with trained JSO officers to respond together to incidents involving individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. The goal is to safely address behavioral health needs on-scene and connect individuals to treatment and supports—avoiding unnecessary incarceration or hospitalization.
Program Goals:
- Prevent unnecessary incarceration and/or hospitalization
- Provide immediate community support, crisis intervention, and care coordination
- Facilitate timely follow-up services to individuals in crisis
- Reduce duplication of mental health services
- Allow law enforcement to return to their normal duties more quickly
- Connect individuals to ongoing case management and long-term services
How It Works:
Co-Responder Teams are assigned to each of the six Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office districts.
Teams respond directly to calls involving individuals experiencing:
- Mental health crises
- Suicide threats or attempts
- Trespassing or disputes involving individuals with known mental health conditions
- Ex-Parte orders
- Outreach needs for vulnerable populations
Mental Health Professionals provide on-scene assessments, de-escalation, and linkage to services.
Case Management Services
Following the initial crisis response, MHRC Co-Responder Case Managers provide continued support, helping individuals connect to long-term care and resources.
Services Include:
- Linking to mental health and primary care services
- Assisting with medication management
- Obtaining benefits (food stamps, medical insurance, SSI/SSDI)
- Securing housing and financial assistance
- Providing employment support and transportation assistance
- Connecting to other social services and supports
Case managers work closely with individuals identified by the Co-Responder teams, MHRC’s jail liaison, and diversion specialists.
